Discovering the Treasures of the LEGO Collection of National Transport and Toy Museum

LEGO bricks—those colourful little interlocking blocks—have been a staple in toy boxes around the world for over 80 years. Did you know that a staggering 4 billion LEGO bricks are produced each year, allowing enthusiasts to create endless possibilities? That’s a lot of creativity in the making! If you’re a LEGO enthusiast of any age, a trip to the LEGO section of the National Transport and Toy Museum is a must-do. Here, you’ll embark on a journey through LEGO history, marvel at incredible LEGO creations, and maybe even spark some inspiration for your next LEGO build.

History of LEGO

The history of LEGO is as fascinating as the bricks themselves. Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, LEGO started as a small workshop producing wooden toys. The name “LEGO” is derived from the Danish words “leg godt,” meaning “play well.” By 1958, the iconic interlocking plastic bricks were introduced, revolutionising the toy industry. Today, LEGO is a global phenomenon, inspiring creativity and innovation in children and adults alike. By exploring the history of LEGO, visitors can learn about the evolution of these iconic bricks and their impact on the toy industry.

LEGO made its way to New Zealand in the mid-1960s, becoming an instant hit among children and parents alike. Initially, LEGO sets were imported from Denmark, and distribution was handled by local toy retailers. The appeal of LEGO’s versatility and educational value quickly won over New Zealand families, leading to a growing demand for these colourful bricks. Over the decades, LEGO has maintained its popularity, with new sets and themes continually capturing the imaginations of Kiwis. Today, LEGO is a staple in New Zealand households, schools, and toy collections, including the extensive display at the National Transport and Toy Museum.
